Poetic Justice in Action

For the record, I would not have taken this action.

But — and I’m just speaking hypothetically here, since I’m not even a District resident — were I to sit on a jury charged with evaluating the guilt of those who did vandalize a Hummer last week, I’d really have no choice but to vote “not guilty.”

Because what happened in no way approached the level of a “crime.” Was it wrong? Sure, fair enough. But a crime? I don’t think so.

As far as I’m concerned, you buy a Hummer (particularly an H2), and you are explicitly making a statement to the world that you’re an asshole, and proud of it. (Well, you’re also making a statement that you’re a negligibly-endowed weasel living in deathly fear of your own latent homosexuality, but that’s another story.) Frankly, I’m surprised that anyone is rallying to this piece-of-shit’s defense.

Yeah, that’s right — the so-called “victim” in this case is a worthless sack of shit. Now, does that automatically mean that we, as a society, should condone the vandalism that resulted? On the whole, no, probably not. But that said, I can’t find myself working up a shred of sympathy for this scumbag.

You start saying, “fuck you,” to the world at large, you can hardly be surprised when someone says, “fuck you, too.”

Except to say that a Hummer has less of an ecological impact than does a Prius!! Bye the time you figure in expected life, manufacturing, battery disposal, etc.

I do not condone violence(self-defense of life not included). However, they are lucky that they weren't shot.

I think we all agree that we need to work to save the environment as much as possible. When a "VIABLE" alternative becomes available, the market will move in that direction.

Wishfull thinking, temper tantrums and violence will not solve the problem.

Eco-terroriss are terrorists and should be delt with like all terrorists.

To be honest, I don't really care all that much about the environmental impact factor. And a lot of people who do preach the hard-core environmental line ignore the exact thing you mentioned -- hybrid battery production still has an impact on the environment, and really, all you're doing by using electrical power is shifting the carbon emission from your car to the power plant. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. But I digress.

But the Hummer market consists solely* of assholes. The very act of Hummer ownership is an explicit insult to everyone else on the planet. "I don't give a rat's ass about any of you. Watch as this behemoth kills your entire family beneath its wheels as I laugh in my armored cocoon."

So do I agree with those who deface property in the name of environmentalism? No. I just don't give a rat's ass about what happens to self-professed assholes. Like I said, you wanna say "fuck you" to the world? Knock yourself out -- you're perfectly free to do so. But don't expect anyone with half a brain to rush to your defense afterward.

Oh, and don't give me any right-wing bullshit about these guys being "eco-terrorists." Equating common vandals with terrorists is positively reprehensible, and a flagrant insult to everyone whose lives are affected by real terrorism.

Were they lucky they weren't shot? Maybe so, but that's more of an indication of the substantial overlap between Hummer owners and right-wing nut jobs.

* Barring search-and-rescue or legitimate military or law-enforcement applications, of course. I'm talking about individual owners.

Hold on a second. I take my first paragraph back. A true electric car might have a greater hidden environmental impact, but a hybrid uses regenerative power.

Turns out the notion that a Prius has a greater "environmental impact" than a Hummer is pure horseshit. A ludicrously flawed study -- i.e., one that pretty much just pulled figures out of its authors' asses -- that has been paraded around by right-wing pundits as if it had some basis in fact.

But really, the most important thing to remember is that Hummer owners are assholes. Period.
